From the great spirit of christopher Colombo discoveries to  Italo Balbo, who crossed the North Atlantic with 24 flying boats in formation, from Rome to New York (and to Chicago and back!). No longer was the US isolated from the Old World. When Balbo appeared at the Madison Square Bowl in Long Island(New York),while in the biggest stadium of Usa ,there were (72,000 seats),outside there were 1,000,000 spectators to welcomes the heroes of the air. To put things into perspective, then Rome had a population of 1,056,000, and NY 1,070,000 Italians! As he was receiving a standing ovation, a young U.S. Army officer, assigned to him as an escort, stood by his side. It was none other than Dwight D. Eisenhower, later to become President of USA.

I would like to close my introduction with a translation of part of Italo Balbo’s speech, pronounced in that occasion. Italians of New York and America, people of my blood and my faith, God has granted the Atlantic Squadron to fulfill its vow: through the paths of the sky, from Rome to America, we bring to you the greetings of Italy and the Italians. Our 48 engines have come to you so that you may feel in the skies of this Metropolis the heartbeat of our Land: the heartbeat of steel and fire. Be proud of being Italian, o people from across the sea, and you, the workers of the untiring arm and the simple heart, you, who have the patience and the genius; you are the pride of Italy.

Guests of the Great America, be the pride of you Old and New Country, observe their laws, and you will be respected. Honor, together with the Tricolor, the beautiful Starred Banner. For years they have been flying together; never has the past seen them disjoined, nor will the future.

I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those Italians and Americans who, with honesty, integrity, hard work,dedication and professionalism, have kept and are keeping high the flags of Italy and the United States of America.

Dal grande spirito di scoperte di Colombo a Italo Balbo, che ha attraversato l’Atlantico del Nord con 24 idrovoloanti, da Roma a New York. Gli Stati Uniti non erano più isolati dal Vecchio Mondo. Quando Balbo apparve al Madison Square Bowl a Long Island (New York), mentre nel più grande stadio di Usa c’erano 72mila persone, fuori vi era più di un milione di spettatori ad accogliere gli eroi del cielo. Per avere un’idea delle prospettive, allora Roma aveva una popolazione di 1.056.000, e a NY 1.070.000 erano italiani! Mentre stava ricevendo una standing ovation, un giovane ufficiale dell’esercito americano, assegnato a lui come una scorta, stava al suo fianco. Era nientemeno che Dwight D. Eisenhower, poi diventato Presidente degli Stati Uniti. Vorrei chiudere la mia introduzione con una traduzione di una parte del discorso di Italo Balbo, pronunciato in quella occasione.

“Italiani  di New York , Italiani d’America, gente del mio sangue e della mia fede, Dio ha concesso allo Squadrone dell Aria di attraversare l’Atlantico e  di svolgere il proprio voto: attraverso i sentieri del cielo, da Roma in America, portiamo a voi i saluti dell’Italia e degli italiani. I nostri motori sono venuti a voi in modo che si possa sentire nei cieli di questa metropoli il battito dei cuori  della nostra terra: il battito del cuore di acciaio e di fuoco. Siate orgogliosi di essere italiani, popolo di oltre oceano, lavoratori dal braccio instancabile e dal cuore semplice, Voi che avete pazienza e genio; voi  che siete  l’orgoglio di Italia. Ospiti della nuova America, siate orgogliosi del vecchio e del Nuovo Paese, osservate  le loro leggi, e sarete rispettati. Onorate insieme al Tricolore la bella bandiera a stelle ed a striscie. Per anni hanno volato, assieme, nel passato le ha viste disgiunte e cosi sara’ per il futuro”.
